BIG NEWS: Houston, we have Impulse!
Impulse Group Houston Chapter is officially a thing! Although the official launch date isn’t set yet, we do know in the coming months this organization will take the city by storm. Impulse Group is sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation and has eleven U.S. branches including South Florida, Atlanta, New York City, San Diego, Dallas, Washington DC, Orlando, and San Francisco. International branches include Mexico City, Guadalajara, Phnom Penh, Bangkok, New Delhi, and Beijing. There is a focus on being on the pulse of the queer community and providing them with brave spaces and events that help to cultivate holistic health, awareness, advocacy and empowerment.
Queer people don’t have too many brave places in Houston to congregate and celebrate themselves in their fullness. Over the past several months, I have been speaking about the importance of queer people recognizing the power of having a space to receive counseling services specialized for them, but we all know that the strength is in the collective. Well, last weekend, I had the privilege of being a part of something new coming soon to Houston that will have an incredible impact on the future creation of brave spaces and events that promote the best in the queer community, including the mental health aspect. I learned from the Founder Jose Ramos that this year there will be a major focus on mental health.
What a time to be a queer person in Houston! This is wonderful news for us who have been not only looking for a space that felt safe enough to be our whole selves, but also recognizing a place to offer our expertise in the collective movement of the community. Impulse Group Chapters have literally revitalized queer communities across the nation with their extravagant events, bold social media campaigns and “in your face” advocacy and to bring it to a city with lots of leaders and resources but few focused specifically on same gender loving, trans-identified or non-gender conforming people is absolutely wonderful.
If you want more information on Impulse Group Houston, go and like them on Facebook. It is incredible to have something coming to Houston that will continue the mission of holistic health as Amy Wine Counseling advocates for. Although we focus on counseling services, it is phenomenal to have such a positive organization coming to fill in another space for the queer community in Houston. Having a safe space such as counseling is important, but also being connected to resources that uplift your identity is vital to your mental health. After all, it is really about the collective.
